NY driver faces multiple charges

A New York driver faces multiple charges after a traffic stop in Tamaqua on Feb. 19.

An officer was monitoring traffic on Route 309, in the area of Biddle Street, when he heard and observed a Dodge truck revving its engine. As the officer continued watching the truck, a motorist pulled up alongside him and reported that the black Dodge had almost run her vehicle off the road. The officer followed the truck south for several yards when it suddenly swerved and struck a telephone pole.The driver was identified as Ryan D. Cornwith, 20, of New York. When Cornwith was able to fumble his way to opening the driver's side door, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and visible signs of intoxication, such as slurred speech and being unsteady on his feet.He refused medical treatment and was transported to Schuylkill Medical Center-South, Pottsville, for blood tests. A pat-down search was conducted, and a round blue pill was found in Cornwith's right front pocket.An inventory search of the truck was conducted while Cornwith was being transported to the hospital. Inside, officers found 10 cans of Bud Lite beer. Under the truck was a glass smoking pipe with burnt residue, which field tested positive for marijuana.Cornwith will be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and careless driving.
