Franklin fields concerns about Phifer Ice Dam

Franklin Township Lion's Club President David Hawk and other members of the club were on hand at this week's township supervisors meeting to discuss the condition and upkeep of Phifer Ice Dam.

Hawk voiced concerns over the cleaning, the upkeep, trash, graffiti, and reports of numerous people "partying there" into the late nighttime hours."I don't think the stipend paid to the cleaning person is enough for the job," Hawk said. "The cleaning is not being done properly, I am not faulting the cleaner, but it needs to be addressed."The cleaning person is paid $25. to open the pavilion facility, assure things are working prior to an event, following an event clean, and then lock the facility.Hawk said, "It might be better to increase the stipend or pay hourly so that more attention is made to keep things clean."Hawk also voiced concerns of the $125 fee to use the pavilion."The Skeet Club in Slatington charges $300 per event, maybe an increase would cause people to take better care of the facilities."According to Chairman Rod Green, the current cost is $225 total, with a $100. portion returned as a deposit, leaving the total rental fee at $125."I am not in favor of raising the prices. It is to be used for the public enjoy," Green said. The supervisors agreed that there should be more police department presence at the park in the late evening hours. The board discussed replacing a "closed at sunset" sign that once was located in the park.Supervisor Robin Cressley said the sign was in place before there were lights at the ball field and the LittleLeague now plays until 9:30 p.m.Hawk said, "The Lion's Club recently paid over $1,200 to have the entire playground area mulched and it is being thrown everywhere."Should we keep wasting our time and money?"Cressley said, "We have a recreation commission that the supervisors, the Lion's Club, and the Franklin Township Little League all sit on, this should be brought up at their meeting."
