Heavy rains damaging roads

Heavy rains are having an impact on roadways in Polk Township.

On Monday, township supervisors discussed the matter, noting that shoulders and swales are deteriorating rapidly because of the recent storms."The heavy rains have caused some shoulders to break down and we have been working to get them repaired," said Chairman Brian Ahner."Every time we catch up, we seem to get more rain."Ahner also brought up the possibility of looking into lowering the speed limit at a curve on Burger Hollow Road.Township engineer Russell Kresge Jr. suggested that placing curve warning signs might be more appropriate. The board will consider its options.Last month, the supervisors discussed the possible purchase of a broom to attach to the new backhoe. Ahner made some inquiries and obtained a quote of $13,900 for an 8-foot broom and $14,450 for a 9-foot broom. The board tabled the discussion until additional information on the brooms was received. In other business, a request was made by CJERP (the joint planning authority for Chestnuthill, Jackson, Eldred, Ross and Polk townships) to consider pooling all of the various township needs for Local Share grant money and setting priorities on the projects.LSA grants are funded by monies collected by the state from area casino revenue. The general consensus of the board was to deny the request."I feel that this goes beyond the scope of CJERP," said solicitor James Fareri."As solicitor for CJERP, I would advise them the same if they asked me."The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 17.
