Keystone West wins opener

Keystone West opened the Senior Babe Ruth State Tournament with a dominant victory on Thursday.

Meanwhile, rain played havoc with other baseball action as both Legion and Little League games involving area teams were postponed.Senior Babe RuthKeystone W.-NorchesterKeystone West beat Norchester, 11-1, for a six-inning mercy-rule win at the Senior Babe Ruth State Tournament.Keystone West, which is a team with players from the Shockers, Hurricanes and Black Diamonds, saw pitchers Darren Goida (5 innings, 4 hits, 8 strike outs, no hits) and Chris Micciche combined to scatter seven Norchester hits and allow just one run while getting error-free defense behind them. Norchester committed four errors in the game.Kestone West went ahead 3-0 in the first inning on a pair of walks by Frank Nietz and KJ Snerr followed by an RBI single by Ben Cordova (1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) and an RBI ground out by Goida (2-for-3, 2 RBIs).A lead-off bunt single by Jordan Knappenberger (2-for-3, 2 runs) started a four-run third inning for Keystone West. Nietz (1-for-2, 3 runs, 2 stolen bases) reached base on an error before Snerr (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI) singled to bring in one run. Goida brought in another on a sacrifice fly before walks to Cordova and Matt Hudicka pushed in another run. Brady Niehoff's RBI single made the score 6-0. After a Jake Kusko single, Niehoff capped the third-inning scoring by coming home on a throwing error when Kusko stole second base.Keystone West pushed the game into mercy-rule territory in the sixth inning. Chris Valdez led off with a walk followed by singles from Knappenberger and Nietz. Valdez scored on a wild pitch before Cordova drove in Knappenberger and Nietz crossed the plate on a throwing error. Goida singled and Nick Porembo's sacrifice fly capped the KW scoring.Norchester got its run in the bottom of the sixth inning on three singles, but it wasn't enough to keep the game alive.Schuy.-Berks LegionTamaqua-Oley ValleyTamaqua's game against Oley Valley in the Schuylkill-Berks Legion playoffs was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning with Oley leading 10-2.The loser's bracket game in the double-elimination tournament will resume tonight at 6 p.m.The Blue Sox lost 2-1 to Hamburg in the opening round of the playoffs on Wednesday night.District 18 11-12 LLTamaqua-Valley EastTamaqua's game against Valley East in the District 18 11-12 year-old Little League Tournament was postponed due to rain.The loser's bracket game in the double-elimination tournament has been moved to tonight at 6 p.m. The winner of the game will take on Valley West in the finals of the tournament on Saturday. The winner of Friday's game would have to beat undefeated Valley West twice to capture the District 18 title.
