Pleasant Valley cheerleaders are District 11 champions

Give me a W. Give me an I. Give me an N. Give me a N-E-R-S. What does it spell? WINNERS.

And that's what the Pleasant Valley High School senior cheerleading squad is: the 2014-2015 District 11 PIAA Competitive Spirit Medium Varsity Champions. The squad received that distinction at the Jan. 10 competition in Easton, competing against four other teams in the medium varsity division: Easton, Freedom, Southern Lehigh (defending District champs), and Blue Mountain.Last year the squad placed second in the PIAA districts."It made us hungry for the championship this year," says Tracy Toth, high school cheerleading coach and middle school seventh-grade learning support teacher. This is her second year coaching varsity. She coached the seventh grade squad at Pleasant Valley for four years and coached the PV Cubs (grades K-4) for five years."Most of the girls I coached are now freshmen, sophomores and juniors," she says. "Almost every girl in my squad I've coached since Cubs. It's come full circle. It's so nice to see how they've progressed. When they were younger, I advised my girls to take tumbling classes in addition. And they did. It helps so much with the stunts we do," says Toth. There are 20 girls on the squad: Haley Toth, captain and Toth's daughter; Abby Roselli, senior co-captain; Bryana Mitchell, senior co-captain; Paris Barton; Savannah Vasquez; Laurissa Smith; Jaidyn Borre; Kelsey Diabo; Elena Nuzzo; Natalie Smith; Mariah Haney; Shaina Baylo; Alexa Deluzio; Maddy Brandt; Marie Vazquez; Emilee Egglinger; DJ Greenzweig; Kennedy DeHaven; Livia Mackes; and Marina Ghin. When the girls learned they had won, there was a whole lot of screaming and crying going on."I immediately began crying. I wanted to win a title so we could have a banner for the gym," says Haley Toth, 17, a junior. Toth has been cheering for 11 years, beginning in first grade.Roselli, 17, has been cheering for nine years and has a 4-year varsity letter."In my freshman year, no one knew our name in competitive cheering, so to be a senior and win this ... there's no better feeling," says Roselli.Mitchell, 17, has also been cheering for nine years and has a two-year varsity letter. Her mom, Teia Mitchell, was a PVHS cheerleader in the 1990s."I knew we had won in my heart before our name was even called out. I still bawled my eyes out. It feels good being a senior and knowing we leave a little of ourselves behind," says Mitchell."The girls are so happy because PV has never won a district championship in cheerleading. We made history. And we get a banner to hang in the gym," says their coach.Their win sends them to States Friday and Saturday to be held at the Giant Center in Hershey. There will be 41 medium varsity teams competing."We hope to advance to day two," says Haley. On Dec. 7, the squad received a bid from the UCA Pocono Regional competition at Kutztown University to the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships in Disney World on Feb. 7-8. They couldn't go because they did not have enough funds at the time."Our goal is to fundraise as much as possible this upcoming year, get a bid, and attend the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships next year," says Toth. The squad will continue to practice two hours, three times a week in addition to their cheering at all of the high school's football, basketball and wrestling competitions."Now we're going to focus on our stunts, hitting the routine and making ourselves sharper," says Coach Toth.Toth says they are really excited about going to states and they're trying to be prepared."Cheerleading is a very subjective sport. You never know how the judges will go," she says. One thing she knows for sure. Her girls will give it everything they've got, proving already that they are winners. If there is anything she hopes her girls take away from their cheerleading experiences, it is, "I hope they learn to continue to push themselves, to keep trying to achieve."
