Fatal crash scene theft

A Palmerton woman has been charged with stealing jewelry from a crash scene where four teens were killed.

State police at Lehighton have charged Amanda Marie Everitt, 24, with removing a silver and ruby necklace that was placed at a memorial at the scene. The crash occurred along Dairy Road, four-tenths of a mile east of Fireline Road, in Lower Towamensing Township, on Dec. 19, 2014.Everitt has been charged with theft, receiving stolen property, and unsworn falsification to authorities.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Cpl. William Gross:On Jan. 2, a family member went to the station and provided Gross with cellphone images of a necklace that was stolen from the site of her son's fatal crash. The necklace was being advertised for sale on Craigslist and Facebook for $80 by Everitt, according to court papers. The victim said that she knew Everitt as an acquaintance of her son before his death and that Everitt was currently attempting to arrange the sale of the necklace from the Palmerton Library. Police went to the Palmerton Library and found Everitt and the necklace.Everitt was on Carbon County probation for an unrelated theft, and was transported back to the station, where she was interviewed by Gross. She repeatedly told police that a mentally impaired male had approached her and requested she sell the necklace for $80 for his mother.Troopers made contact with the mentally impaired male at his residence, and were able to determine that he had no involvement in the theft or possession of the necklace.Everitt finally admitted to being driven to the site of the fatal accident, removing the necklace, and advertising it for sale.A date has not been set for her preliminary hearing before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
