Second quarter lifts Tribe

Everyone knows the cliché, "it's not how you start, it's how you finish."

Sometimes in the complex game of basketball, a team can start strong, finish strong, and still end up on the losing side of the scoreboard.Panther Valley outscored Lehighton by three points in the both the first and fourth frames. However, Lehighton capitalized on a ton of Panther Valley turnovers that propelled the Lady Indians to a 51-32 Schuylkill League victory.Panther Valley found early success in the first frame thanks to sharpshooter Macey Markovich who had three triples during the period. However, Markovich was in some early foul trouble, and Lehighton amped up the defensive pressure."The full court 2-2-1 press and dropping back to a half court zone worked out well for us," explained Lehighton head coach Eric Gidney. "Our defense created offense for us. We had to score in order to get into that defense."Gidney's squad took care of the ball in the second quarter, and forced nine Lady Panther turnovers.Lehighton outscored Panther Valley 23-2 in the quarter that included a 13-0 run, of which nine points came directly off turnovers."It comes down to the same thing we have an issue with every time ... breaking the press," said Panther Valley head coach Brad Hurley. "We did a fantastic job for three other quarters, but we didn't in the second. When you get tired, you have to fight through it and we're not doing that. We're making mistakes when we're tired."The Indians were dangerous in the open floor when they had space to utilize their athleticism.Gidney said of the transition game, "It's absolutely a strong point of our team. We work on conditioning every day. I push them hard; we can't get outworked or out-hustled. We do have speed and we factor that into our game plan on both sides of the ball."Lehighton's Aubrey Blasiak was scoreless until the Indians' monster second quarter, as the freshman contributed a dozen points during the spurt. Blasiak finished the contest with a game-high 20 points during the win."She gets better every single game," the Lehighton coach said of Blasiak. "I think I'm spoiled to have some of this young talent. As a coach you have to be aware of the fact that she's a freshman and you want to make sure there's no animosity from anyone else on the team. The rest of the girls realize she is a big part of the future of this program and can score the basketball."When the result of the second quarter is disregarded, the Lady Panthers actually outscored the Lady Indians by a 30-28 margin over the remainder of the contest."I have to credit the girls, they did everything they were told to do tonight," said Hurley "We should be more comfortable dealing with the pressure by now though. I think we did a much better job in the half court. We're getting better at passing, and besides losing Blasiak, defensively, we did a good job."Gidney was pleased with his team's performance."Hats off to Panther Valley. They put us on the rope in the first quarter," said Gidney. "We kept our composure. We were prepared and it just took us a few minutes to get our feet underneath us."We're starting to show some of our maturity despite our youth. We're relying on that youth a little bit more and the girls seems fearless, which is rubbing off on the rest of the team."PANTHER VALLEYMarochoc 0-0-0-0, Vance 5-1-3-11, Picht 0-0-0-0, Corby 0-0-0-0, Smith 0-1-2-1, Ma.
