What about state and local taxes?

Once you've filed a federal tax return online, you're not done. You've still got to consider how (and where) you'll file your state and local returns.

Both state and most local income tax returns can now be filed electronically for free or for a small fee.If you qualify for the Federal Free File program at

freefile.irs.gov, which allows many taxpayers to download tax preparation software at no charge, you may also qualify to use Pennsylvania's PA Free File for state returns.Qualifications for this program can be found at

revenue.pa.gov by clicking on the "PA Free File" image. The program is typically restricted to families with a federal adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less for the tax year, although additional restrictions may apply.Pennsylvania offers two other free e-filing options. Free File fillable forms and PA Direct File are online versions of the state's paper tax forms. These forms include automatic calculators, although they do require some basic tax knowledge.PA Direct File is slightly more user-friendly and uses a question and answer format to guide users to the forms they need. Most local earned income tax returns can also be filed online, depending on your local municipality.Berkheimer Tax Administrator (the primary tax collector for Carbon County municipalities) allows taxpayers to file online at www.berk-e.com.
