Schuylkill marriage licenses redesigned

Marriage licenses in Schuylkill County have a new look.

Theresa Santai-Gaffney, county register of wills and clerk of orphans court, rolled out the new licenses this week. The new design features a faint image of the county courthouse in the background."We are so rich in history, and I thought it was important that our marriage licenses represent our county," Santai-Gaffney said Wednesday. "I'm proud of them."The image of the courthouse comes from a painting by Kathleen Howell, Newport. Santai-Gaffney said Howell has paintings of all 67 county courthouses in the state hanging in Harrisburg.Santai-Gaffney said people will soon be able to purchase an 8-by-11-inch "keepsake" license from the office. The first of the new licenses was issued Wednesday to a couple that will be getting married on Valentine's Day.Santai-Gaffney's office has issued nearly 1,500 marriage licenses over the past two years. Last year, they issued 746 licenses. In 2013, they issued 726 licenses. As of Wednesday, 41 marriage licenses were issued this year. For more information, visit the Register of Wills office online on the county's website at
