Watchdog alerts family members

Gendry is your typical pet dog.

He's a dog that was rescued by Ronald and Jenny Hood of 37 Center St., Lansford, and their sons, Stephen, 9, and Bradley 10. He's mostly Stephen's dog, all the family members agree. The 75-pound pit bull and boxer mix likes to wrestle with household members, jump for a rawhide bone, bark at the neighbor's dog and put up a fuss when company visits.Last week, he did something that made the adoptive family especially proud. It was about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, and Stephen and Bradley were on a two-hour delay for school.Gendry often jumps on the couch and looks out the window, but this time he went into a frenzy. He barked furiously and wouldn't stop. When Jenny looked out the window, she saw what had upset Gentry. An 85-year-old neighbor had tried climbing over a snow bank and fell in the street.Jenny ran out to help the neighbor. Another local resident, Amy Goida, was coming around the corner and saw the elderly man in distress and she, too, went to his aid.So did another nearby resident. While the feat by Gendry didn't rank with those of Old Yeller, it still made the Hood family proud."He likes to look out the window," Jenny said. "A little dog lives close by and he barks at the little dog. But his barking was different this time."Hood said he's proud that Gendry alerted the family to such a serious situation. He said, "Gendry saw the man was in trouble and made sure Jenny did, too."The hoods adopted their brindle-colored, mixed breed dog less than a year ago.Initially, Gendry was rescued in North Carolina. When that owner moved locally and couldn't have a dog, the Hoods agreed to take him."Stephen always wanted a dog," Ron said. "Gendry is well-behaved and very protective of the family."Gendry also loves playing ball. Both of Hood's sons play baseball, but they can't practice in the yard when Gendry is outside."Gendry is fast and always takes the ball," he said."He's definitely a Hood," Ron said. "He likes to play ball."
