Harvilla seeks sheriff nomination

Anthony C. Harvilla of Tresckow, Banks Township, will seek the Democratic nomination for Sheriff of Carbon County. He is a lifelong resident of Carbon County.

Harvilla earned a bachelor's degree in law enforcement and corrections from the Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree in public administration from Marywood College.Harvilla began his law enforcement career in 1977 as the first work release coordinator at the Carbon County Prison. In 1980, he was appointed as a Carbon County adult probation officer, and five months later was promoted to chief adult probation officer. In 1989, Harvilla accepted a position with the U.S. Courts as a federal probation officer. In 2010, he was promoted to chief U.S. probation officer in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Harvilla oversaw a staff of 57 employees in four divisional offices. His agency provided services to 17 federal judges, and his annual budget was nearly $5 million.Before his mandatory law enforcement officer retirement, Harvilla received several special service awards and numerous hours of law enforcement and management training. In November 2014, he was honored by the court for his contributions to a nationally recognized offender re-entry program.Harvilla is currently a special deputy sheriff. He is a member of the Carbon County Criminal Justice Advisory Board and serves on several committees. Harvilla is a member of National Sheriffs' Association, Pennsylvania Sheriffs' Association, and Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association.Harvilla holds memberships in the Tresckow Game and Gun Club, Paradise Hunting and Fishing Club, Beaver Dam Outdoors Club, Kelayres Outdoor Club and the Tresckow Fire Company.Endorsed by former Sheriff Pete Hoherchak and current Sheriff Dwight Nothstein, Harvilla said, "I have spent my entire career in public service and want to continue to share my knowledge, extensive training, and administrative experience with the citizens of Carbon County. I am seeking this nomination to strive for excellence in service to the courts and the community through professionalism and effective leadership."Harvilla is married to his wife of 34 years, Cheryl, and has two daughters, Lauren and Lindsey.
