Lehighton sees crossing guard shortage

Cooler morning temperatures and big yellow school buses are just two of the signals of the end of summer.

Lehighton school district went back in session Monday, leaving the town a little quieter at night and the pool open only for weekends until the inevitable closing after Labor Day.Back to school presents challenges not only for parents' pocketbooks and schedules, but also for the borough. There is a crossing guard shortage in Lehighton."We are desperate for more fill-in crossing guards," Police Chief Brian Biechy said during the borough meeting.Dotti Farkas, crossing guard of the Second Street intersection bus stop, agrees with Biechy."We've been short for a while now. When I was out with thyroid cancer there was no one to cover my corner. I'd have to come out on days I was feeling up to it," she said.Farkas has been working as a crossing guard for 16 years, working at her current stop for six of those years."I don't think people think of it as a serious job. But these kids need someone to take care of them," she said. One substitute guard, Stacy Smith, has already been hired on the contingency that she meets with the chief in person first.Anyone interested in working as a crossing guard can go to the police station and fill out an application.
