Weissport Council adds new member

Weissport President Eugene Kershner welcomed the newest member to council Monday night.

Linda Schoenberger was appointed by the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas to fill the unexpired term of former Vice President Susan Pywar, who previously resigned.Weissport Borough is among the growing number of boroughs that are experiencing issues with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation improvement project of ADA ramps.Borough secretary Jillyan Sterling said, "Complaints will be handled between the borough, PennDOT, and the contractor upon completion of the project when the project coordinators have a review of the completed work in order to sign off on the project."Improvements to the Borough Public Works department will be coming soon.Council unanimously approved a motion made by council members Brenda Leiby and Schoenberger to purchase a sickle bar attachment for their current backhoe, a zero-turn riding tractor, and a pole saw at a cost of $12,623.In previous meeting, council member Arland Moyer pointed out an issue with the present tractor and the cost of the quotes received to cut the area along the levee, where the sickle bar mower will be used.Moyer said Monday, "If we would have the levee cut twice a year (the new equipment) would pay for itself."Moyer brought up a traffic concern at the intersection of White and Park streets."The traffic comes out White Street and comes around the corner and proceeds up the hill to Bridge Street," Moyer said."The stop sign would require traffic to stop on White Street at Park Street before proceeding around the corner and up the hill," he said.Council members thought there is a stop sign already listed in the ordinance for this intersection.Upon review of the ordinance, the issue of placing a stop sign at the intersection will be pursued.
