Nesquehoning cyclist facing multiple counts after chase

A Nesquehoning motorcyclist is facing multiple charges following a high-speed chase that occurred on July 16 in the borough and in which speeds reached 100 mph.

Leonard Rehatchek, 26, of 219 Stock St., has been charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, recklessly endangering another person, registration and certificate of title required, stop signs and yield signs, careless driving, reckless driving, duty of driver on approach of emergency vehicle, driving on roadways laned for traffic, driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed, vehicle turning left, driving on the right side of the road, and operating a vehicle without financial responsibility.On July 16, officer Timothy Wuttke attempted to stop a motorcycle along Route 209 for no registration plate. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren, but the operator, later identified as Rehatchek, accelerated at a high rate of speed.The pursuit continued with the cyclist driving in the wrong lane at times, and at one point becoming airborne as the bike passed the intersection of Allen and Rhume streets. The chase continued onto Route 54, when the speed was clocked at 90 mph. The chase continued onto Park Avenue when Wuttke attempted to block the bike, but the driver drove around the police cruiser and fled back on Route 54 with the speed now clocked at 100 mph. At that point Wuttke discontinued the chase for safety reasons.Wuttke was flagged down by residents who advised they saw the bike turn onto Tippets Road. Wuttke checked the area and found the motorcycle hidden behind a water shed off Tippets Road. The bike was registered to Rehatchek.On July 17 chief Sean Smith received a call from Sherry Rehatchek, of 219 Stock St. that her 2001 Chevrolet Impala had been removed from in front of her residence without her permission and the keys were missing from her home. She suspected her son.Smith was going to find her son concerning the incident with officer Wuttke and found the Impala parked in front of his home.During the course of the investigation Rehatchek was interviewed by police and admitted taking the Impala without permission and also being the one involved in the chase with Wuttke.Smith charged Rehatchek with unauthorized use of an automobile for the incident with the Impala.
