Schuylkill drowning victim identified

A Philadelphia man has been identified as the victim of a drowning along the Schuylkill River just south of Port Clinton, at the Schuylkill/Berks county line.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said David Tarasyuk, 20, was pronounced dead at the St. Joseph Hospital, Reading, after he was pulled from the river about 4:45 p.m. on Sunday.Troopers said Tarasyuk was swimming in a area commonly known as "the rock." It is a gathering place for young individuals although swimming is prohibited in most of the area.Troopers said Tarasyuk entered the water and immediately experienced trouble while attempting to swim across the river. Several of his brothers noticed him in trouble and swam out to him. The brothers became exhausted and were unable to pull the victim to shore.A call to 9-1-1 resulted in divers from the Schuylkill Haven Fire Department and Virginville Fire Department, from Berks County, responding. The victim was located by Schuylkill Haven divers in about 10 feet of water.Troopers added that despite the area where swimming is not authorized, signs warning this prohibition are regularly ignored and/or torn down.
