Union contract reached

Nesquehoning has reached a tentative agreement with its union employees in the public works department.

Borough council adopted the tentative agreement this week after reaching acceptable terms with Teamsters. The two parties will now review the tentative agreement before it is finalized. The contract would be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2015.Councilman Don DeMarco said the new contract is a five-year contract. It covers a total of four positions in the water and sewer departments. Terms include wage increases of $1 an hour for 2015, 80 cents for 2016, 60 cents for 2017 and 2018, and no increase for 2019.DeMarco also noted that it establishes a one-time $1 an hour increase for the position of leadman on the streets department; and a one-time $2 an hour increase for the head of the sewer department. The contract, if finalized, also increases the insurance copay from $32 to $37; and increases life insurance to $50,000.In a related matter, council voted to accept the resignation of Salvatore A. Digilio Jr., effective June 1. Digilio was a member of the streets department. In other business, Bob Stevenson, secretary of the board of trustees of Dimmick Memorial Library, and Mary Ann Kmetz, library director, spoke to council about possibly providing a donation to the library.Stevenson said that Dimmick is the main library for Jim Thorpe, Nesquehoning, Penn Forest Township, Kidder Township and the Jim Thorpe School District.Kmetz noted that last year 3,300 residents of the community were served, adding that there are thousands of paper and online resources available to the residents."We need you to understand your residents come to us for free, and we're hoping you can back us up," she said.Stevenson said that the state funding the library receives is not enough to completely operate the facility so community support is needed and asked if the borough could give something to help cover the expenses of the library so it can continue to serve the Nesquehoning community.Council said they would discuss the matter. No action was taken.
