Panther board learns about lunches

A tray filled with food described as typical of what would be served in the high school or middle school cafeterias was presented to members of the Panther Valley School Board on Thursday.

Francine Holley, cafeteria supervisor, explained that a chicken patty sandwich with lettuce is offered each Tuesday to high school and middle school students. In addition, "There's always fresh fruit and fresh vegetables offered," she said.High school and middle school students have the option of two fruits and two vegetables each. Elementary grade students can select one fruit.She said she spent one lunch period in the high school dining room and went to different tables talking to students and observed their food selections.Holley explained that only romaine lettuce, a green, leafy vegetable under federal guidelines, is served. Iceberg lettuce has not been used for the past two years.She also said that rolls served must be whole grain to comply with federal standards. Fresh rolls arrive each Monday and Wednesday. She said they are either used right away or frozen.The price of a school lunch, which also can have some canned vegetables and includes a beverage, is $2.45. The government allows students from low income households to have reduced lunch prices and, in some cases, free lunches.The presentation came at the request of the superintendent, Dennis Kergick.In other board matters:• A budget meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday in the board room. Business manager Kenneth Marx Jr. said the board must vote on the final proposed budget on May 14 and vote on the final budget on June 11. The initial preliminary budget indicated a tax increase of 3 mills.• Board member Roy Angst attended his last official meeting. He resigned due to health issues, but said he might still attend meetings as a member of the audience.• Angst urged rapid action on hiring a girls' basketball coach. Brad Hurley, who was coach the past two seasons, resigned. Board member Anthony DeMarco said interviews for a coach are scheduled for Monday and the board anticipates hiring one at the May 14 meeting.• The board accepted the resignation of Hollie Carsia, middle school teacher, effective April 21.• Lauren Schock Wall was hired as a short-term substitute at the elementary school effective May 11 and continue until June 11. She will be paid $135 per day.• Nicolette Schietrum was hired as a short-term substitute at the middle school, effective April 10 and continue until a date to be determined at the rate of $135 per day.• Three spring workers were approved for athletic events. They are Kergick, Lisa Georgis and Janet Fisher. Georgis and Fisher will receive $25 per event. Kergick declined the payment.Angst said he was at a track meet and observed Kergick assisting. He praised Kergick for being involved in extra-curricular activities.• The board defeated a proposal to prohibit public parking at the stadium parking lot. Board members who voted against the matter were Angst, John Williams, Anthony DeMarco, Brian Dolena, Irege Genther, Dan Heaney and Bill Hunsicker. Jeff Markovich and Michelle Markovich were absent.• The board approved the sale of a property by the Carbon County Tax Claim Bureau that is located at 20 E. Kline Ave., Lansford. The bidder is Yvonne Mason and the price is $774. The reputed owner is Amarjit Bansal.
