Colts' Keer fires shutout

Four games within a week forced Marian baseball coach Tony Radocha to abandon his starting pitching rotation.

He tapped sophomore Daniel Keer for duty against Weatherly on Saturday in a game at Middleport, which the Colts won 10-0 in 4 1/2 innings. What a debut for Keer!In the five innings of pitching against the Wreckers, he gave up only one hit, a single in the fourth. He struck out 10 batters and allowed just two walks. He got out of six full-count situations with four whiffs and one grounder that he snagged and tossed to first for the out.Keer also got good support from his teammates as the Colts got 14 hits in four innings, five of them coming in an explosive six-run first inning. Not bad for a team that has just one starting senior.Marian, 6-1 for the season and 5-0 in league play, showed the potency a day after being extended to nine innings before topping Minersville, 4-3, on Friday night."Sometimes as a coach you worry about the letdown," Radocha admitted. His worries were for naught though as Keer and his team came fired up.Besides his pitching success, Keer got on base twice, hitting a double and a single. On his third at bat, he hit a fly ball deep to the center field fence.Angelo Maskornick had three RBIs on a double and two singles for Marian. He also stole a base. Designated hitter KJ Snerr scored twice, getting to base on a pair of singles and a walk."We played solid defense," Radocha said. "Danny had a lot of support.""We're playing good team baseball right now. Every game we'll gain a little more momentum as the season carries on. We had good timely hits from some spot starters today."Radocha also said he is hoping to work Keer into the staring rotation.Keer said his favorite pitch is his fast ball.He said whenever he got behind on the count, it was the fast ball that got him out of trouble. In those situations, "I was throwing my fast balls, going right at 'em," he said.Although it was his first start, and only his second time on the mound in games this season, he said he wasn't at all nervous. "I just wanted to go out there and throw strikes," he said.Weatherly coach Brian Kaminski admitted that Keer was a problem for his team, which is now 0-5 for the season."Keer threw great for Marian," Karminski said. "He had a great curve ball. A fast ball. His location was very good."Karminski also admitted, "Our defense hurt us."Offensively, the Wreckers had only three base runners. In the first inning, second batter Chris MacNeal walked and stole second. Keer had three strike outs in the inning to prevent him from doing any scoring. The closest Weatherly came to scoring was in the fourth. MacNeal, the leadoff batter in the frame, walked and again stole second. The Colts got two outs before Keer walked Kyle Osifat. A strikeout on four pitches ended the minor threat. The first inning barrage by Marian was started when Dante Salerno walked on four pitches, stole second, got to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Nick Kubishin. Kubishin went to third on a Snerr base hit and scored on a hit by Keer. Both base runners came home on Maskornick's two-base blast.Adam Michalesko singled home Maskornick. A single and a sacrifice fly moved Michalesko to third. When Weatherly pitcher Brett Kella tried to pick off a first base runner, Michalesko scrambled home for the sixth run of the inning.Weatherly 000 00 - 0 1 2Marian 620 2x - 10 14 0Kella and Hoffman; Keer and Salerno.
