JT boys, Tamaqua girls get wins

For the second straight week, the Jim Thorpe boys were the class of the field.

But this time, the Olympians weren't alone.A week after Jim Thorpe took the boys' title at its Olympian Invitational, the Tamaqua girls did the same at last night's Fifth Annual Blue Raider Invite. The Olympians took the boys crown with 149 points, while the Lady Raiders won the girls championship at their event with 82.5 points.Rayan Green, who won four individual events for the second week in a row, led Jim Thorpe with another stunning performance.Green took first in the 110 (16.0) and 300 (41.54) hurdles along with the triple jump (44-5) and high jump (6-0)."I feel excellent," said Green. "I just want to keep up the good work. I don't want to stop at all. I just hope this keeps going on for me."Green's success also seems to be infectious.Dylan Bucior took the top spot in the 800 (2:02.08) and 1600 (4:38.54) while also helping the Olympians win the 3200 relay with a school and meet record time of 8:20.31."Getting that school record was definitely the most satisfying thing today," said Bucior, who was also on the 1600 relay team that took second. "We came in here and really wanted to get the record. Our coaches thought we could go under by about four seconds, but we did it by seven. It's definitely exciting."Sam Gilkes, who took first in the 400, second in the 200 and long jump and was also on the 1600 relay team with Bucior, Chalid Smalls-Stokes and Ben Saxon, was thrilled to be a part of his team's success."We came into the season 20 strong," Gilkes said of the Olympians' roster. "But we are built for invites and meets and we're currently undefeated in the (Schuylkill) League. It's an amazing feeling."Jim Thorpe's Johnathan Condly took the top spot in the 3200 with a time of 10:22.73. Teammates Jacob Saxon and Jian Gentile took second and third, respectively. The Palmerton boys took second with 97 points.Jon Anthony took the top spot in the discus for the Blue Bombers with a throw of 140-3, but admitted there's still room for improvement."Having that power helps, but I'm still working on my spin," Anthony said. "(My) distances are going over 150, it's just a matter of doing it at a meet rather than at practice."The Lehighton boys took third in the team standings with 83 points.Tyler Crum continued to show excellent form, winning the long jump with a mark of 20-11.5 while also taking second in the 100 with a time of 11.66.Crum was also a part of the winning 400 relay team along with Jose Ortiz, Gavin Zehner and Craig Serfass, an event he feels the group can only get better at."Gavin stepped in for Jack (Schaeffer) and did a really good job getting us the lead," Crum said of Zehner. "Once we get out handoffs down, we should really be able to cut our time by a lot."If we get that, I think we can go to states."Lehighton's Tom Ruzicka won the javelin with a throw of 154-8, a mark he wasn't so sure he'd hit."It just shows why you can't quit on your first throw," he said. "You get four of them, and luckily my best throw was my last one."I had to slow up a little bit because my feet were moving too fast on my other ones and that's why they weren't so good. But I was able to get it right and just take off."Tamaqua's Malik Roper edged Crum in the 100, winning the event with a time of 11.63."I really had to push myself in the last 20 meters," said Roper. "It was neck-and-neck, but I just had to push through it and keep good form and it came down to my lean at the line."Monika Shimko had another stellar performance for the Lady Raiders, winning the 800 (2:24.65) and 1600 (5:32.22) while also running the anchor leg on the 3200 relay team that took second with a time of 10:15.71."I feel like my times are OK, but they could definitely be better," said Shimko. "But today allowed me to work on getting consistent lap splits and try to improve my times, so I'm happy with that."Colleen Hoffman took first in the pole vault for the Lady Olympians, who finished fourth in the team standings, with a winning height of 10-0."I wanted to win," she said. "I've been doing 10-0 consistently, and I just wanted to get it done. I was hoping for 10-6, but I'll take the win."I've been training really hard to get here. I tore my ACL during my junior year of soccer and competed with it all of last year until after districts when I had surgery. Physically, I'm so much stronger than before and I think that's helped me. But I still have more goals that I want to accomplish."Lehighton's Celina Fital won the high jump at 5-0 but knows she's capable of more."I could have made that in my first few jumps, even though it took me until my fourth. But I got it," she said. "I was expecting to make 5-0 to begin with, but it took me a little bit."I'm still shooting for that 5-2. I just have to keep my head up and stay positive."Second place finishersKayley Kovac, Jim Thorpe (3200, 12:35.44); Connor Fabian, Lehighton (110 hurdles, 16.31); Trevor Skripko, Tamaqua (shot put, 44-11.5); Kayla Holland, Tamaqua (discus, 91-4); Brooke Cope, Jim Thorpe (javelin, 139-2); Jacob Saxon, Jim Thorpe (1600, 4:39.92); Spencer Hay, Palmerton (40-6.5); Logan Blasiak, Palmerton (pole vault, 12-6); Lehighton girls 400 relay (Tia Brownmiller, Celina Fital, Christina Green, Rajah Quinones) 52.58; Jaclyn Wood, Palmerton (300 hurdles, 49;16; triple jump, 33-4.5); Palmerton boys 400 relay (Harley Appelbaum, Sean Doherty, Dominic Shivone, Mike Stasko) 46.09; Sean Doherty, Palmerton (300 hurdles, 41.85); Spencer Hay, Palmerton (high jump, 5-10); Lehighton girls 1600 relay (Jenifer Beers, Tia Brownmiller, Celina Fital, Grace Shanton) 4:19.80.Third place finishersBrooke Cope, Jim Thorpe (shot put 30-6); Paige Demetriades, Tamqaqua (pole vault, 9-6); Spencer Hay, Palmerton (long jump, 19-3); Nate Silfies, Palmerton (discus, 117-6); Riley Durishin, Lehighton (high jump, 4-10); Charles Debski, Palmerton (javelin, 144-6); Matthew Strubinger, Lehighton (110 hurdles, 16.55); Nicole Wasserleben, Tamaqua (1600, 5:48.35); Erin Shigo, Jim Thorpe (discus, 85-4); Autumn Cope, Jim Thorpe (javelin, 121-11); Matt Smarr, Tamaqua (pole vault, 12-0); Tamaqua 400 relay (Shanna Brinkworth, Alexis Baddick, Jade Pradel, Morgan Boyle) 53.49; Jim Thorpe boys 400 relay (Chalid Smalls-Stokes, Joseph Schwartz, Johnathan Condly, Randy Sanon) 46.62; Connor Fabian, Lehighton (300 hurdles, 42.95); Meghann Principe, Jim Thorpe (800, 2:30.23); Harley Appelbaum, Palmerton (200, 24.18).
