Retiring Schuylkill treasurer lauded

Schuylkill County Treasurer Jacqueline V. McGovern, who is retiring in December after 20 years on the job, was cited Wednesday by state Sen. David G. Argall and Reps. Neal Goodman, Jerry Knowles and Mike Tobash.

The legislators presented McGovern with official congratulatory citations from the state Senate and the House of Representatives for her accomplishments.First elected in 1995 to replace then-treasurer Jerry Lengle, McGovern not only refurbished her small room in the treasurer's office in dusty blue with patriotic wall hangings and a "God Bless America" border, she redid the way the department did business."I was able to make changes that benefited the county as well as the office," she said. "That included computerization and changing all the programs to fit the office to make the office run better and more efficiently."McGovern, 72, started earning a living as soon as she got her working papers at age 14. She started with a job at a Sun Ray drugstore's soda fountain, then at Pomeroy's department store."I've been working my whole life. I want to just enjoy my time," she said. She plans to spend her newfound leisure time with her husband and grandchildren and her many friends.McGovern, a Republican, in February announced her plans to retire. Democrat Brett M. Clark and Republicans Linda Gallo Marchalk and Albert L. Gricoski are seeking their parties' nominations to the office in the May 19 primary.
