Students learn about careers

Fifteen aspiring Health Career students studying at the Schuylkill Technology Center, Frackville campus, recently participated in a full day "Job Shadow" event at the Blue Mountain Health System's Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital in Lehighton.

The event, which focused on various career pathways in the medical field, included instruction, explanations and employment opportunities of various departments within the facility. Departments that students visited and learned about included the laboratory, imaging departments, rehabilitation services and cardiac services. The day was set up to enhance the students' curriculum and to provide a realistic experience outside of the classroom. The full-day program was coordinated by STC's health career instructor Karen Spence Phillips and Denise Kennedy, spokeswoman of Blue Mountain Health System's public relations department."Career Day helps students with a better understanding of how a local community hospital operates on a daily basis to better serve those in and around our communities," Kennedy said. "Students get to interact with health system staff and they get a better understanding of different career opportunities and how to go about applying for careers after graduation right in their backyards."The students who attended the shadowing event included sophomore and juniors who are studying to become certified nursing assistants.
