Weissport supports fire facility

During the Monday meeting, Weissport joined the growing number of municipalities and agencies supporting the Carbon County commissioners' request for help.

During the last commissioners meeting, Chairman Wayne Nothstein said he "has seen a lot of support from the municipalities and emergency responders through the letters of support the county asked local officials to write."Councilwoman Brenda Leiby said, "there is no reason why we shouldn't support this," as she made a motion that Weissport send a letter of support for the project.Following a unanimous vote, President GeneKershner said, "It is a great use of the property up there."In other reports, Councilman Arland Moyer said the Route 209 bridge project "is moving along nicely. They should be done sometime in May."Under the levee update, Councilman Moyer said, "The Army Corps of Engineers has moved in."They will be refurbishing a wall along the river that eroded from the water flow and tree scouring.Kershner said, "Trees have grown on the south side of the levee and have been brought downriver from the north side and over the years scoured the wall." Council is not sure how long this project will take.Council has also requested that borough secretary Jillyan Sterling reach out to Rep. Doyle Heffley's office for assistance with any type of funding that is available that would allow council to acquire a building next door to the current Borough Hall.Kershner said, "The recently vacant building has ample meeting quarters, a second floor, and plenty of garage space that would allow crews ample room to work on equipment. It would provide ample room for the borough."
