Diner has new owner, look

A longtime restaurant in Slatington has a new look, name and menu.

Out is the Slatington Diner, and in its place at 662 Main St. is Charlotte Fay's Main Street Diner."Our goals for the diner are not just to provide good, home-cooked food in a fun environment, but to really create a community space that people can be proud of," according to owner Jason Ruff, who said the diner has been named after two of his great-grandmothers.Ruff said the menu is simple, and includes most of the basic diner dishes, many of which can be customized to suit each customer. He added that they haven't included a lot of extras because they wanted a more streamlined and less expensive menu."Nothing fancy, but some of our more popular items have been our homemade meatloaf, crab cakes, cream chipped beef, corned beef hash, hamburgers, and especially my paternal grandmother's apple dumplings," he said. "She loves seeing them in our bakery case when she comes to eat."Ruff said the diner's prices are extremely affordable."We attempted, as much as possible, to price our items lower than other local diners," he said. "Many customers have expressed their satisfaction with our prices."Ruff said the diner has received "tons" of feedback from its customers, and have "used all of it to consistently improve our menu, processes and procedures, and will continue to do so."People love the décor, the menu items, and especially watching my maternal grandmother making some of our homemade stuff," he said. "Most customers know her, as she's a Slatington native, and it's so great being able to have her working with us."The diner has seven employees, not including himself, said Ruff. Among them are three Slatingtonians, three family members and one employee who worked for a previous owner, he said.Since taking over, Ruff said he's heard many stories about the diner's history."We talked to many, many locals that enjoy sharing their stories of visiting Handwerk's back in the early '60s," he said. "We love hearing them and appreciate their continued commitment to supporting our diner now."Ruff said he had a long career in serving at various local Lehigh Valley restaurants. In addition, he has been a local concessionaire for the past 15 years, and had a busing job at 14 years old at the old Five Stars Inn in Northampton.Charlotte Fay's Main Street Diner is open seven days a week at 7 a.m. The kitchen stays open until 7 p.m., while the diner stays open until 9 or 10 p.m. as more of a coffee shop serving desserts, drinks and soups.
