Pedersen fires no-hitter

When a pitcher has given up no hits and the game moves into the late innings, there is usually a buzz around the field about what might happen.

Thursday, without the buzz, Tamaqua junior Bailey Pedersen "quietly" no hit Jim Thorpe in a 9-0 Schuylkill League victory.Pedersen's was not overpowering, but her control and the defense behind her were superb. She walked only one and struck out only one. By the fifth inning her drop pitch had produced 10 ground ball outs."I was able to hit my spots today," she said. "I rely on our defense to make plays and they came through."The only ball hit hard against Pedersen was a line drive to third by Thorpe's Ciara Miranda to start off the second inning, but the ball was dropped for an error. Pedersen's efficiency was obvious. She never pitched to more than four batters in an inning and in the third she retired the side on just four pitches."Bailey was very impressive today considering that we have only played twice outside." Her drop was great and she was ahead of nearly all their hitters," said Raiders' coach Jillian Barron.Tamaqua (2-0) put up a run in their half of the first inning when senior captain, Shayna Dietrich, who went 4-for-4 in the game, singled to centerfield. She later scored on a two out single by Caitlyn Joseph.Jim Thorpe's pitcher Jada Hoherchak kept Tamaqua off balance for the first two innings with a mixture of fastballs and off speed pitches. In the Raider third, however, three straight hits including a two-run double by Carly Sassaman plated two more runs for the home team.In the fourth, the Raiders scored their fourth run with only one infield hit, that by second baseman Courtney Hoffman. She stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch."Our defense is very young and learning on the job," said Jim Thorpe coach Bernice Bott, who is in her 10th year at the helm of the Lady Olympians (0-2). "We simply have not played enough softball and their knowledge of the game is limited. We hung in there for awhile, but some mental miscues in the field did us in."After Dietrich ripped a double to start the Raider fifth, Bott replaced Hoherchak with Maggie Holloway and Tamaqua pushed across a run aided by a Thorpe error. In the sixth, the Raiders put the game away by scoring four runs, aided by two hits, three stolen bases, an error, and a wild pitch."We started the game off slowly," said Barron. "I'd like to see us go right at them in the first few innings."The blustery afternoon belonged to the right-handed Pedersen, who threw her first career no-hitter."In our first game, I had given up no hits for the first three innings and my teammates were kidding me about throwing one. Today nobody said anything."Pedersen finished her performance in the seventh by retiring the side in order, and getting her only strikeout to end the game."I never got too worked up about it," she said. "In the last few innings I just tried to think 'go out-by-out and see what happens.'"What happened was a near-perfect outing. That speaks loudly for Baily Pederson's quiet no-hit performance.Jim Thorpe 000 000 0 - 0 0 4Tamaqua 102 114 x - 9 9 2Hoherchak, Holloway (5) and Marzen; Pedersen and Sassaman.
