Jim Thorpe sweeps Nativity

Any coach in any sport will tell you that the main goal every time their team competes is to get better or improve on their last outing.

On Wednesday, that's exactly what the Jim Thorpe Olympian track and field team accomplished, sweeping Nativity with a 115-35 win in boys action and a 116-33 victory in girls competition."I was very happy with our effort today and I can honestly say everybody got better," said Jim Thorpe coach Frank Miller. "I saw a lot of kids gain confidence today and I saw a lot of kids progress. To break two school records and perform pretty well this early in the season is a great sign for us moving forward."A big reason for the Olympians success on the boys side was Rayan Green. Green went four-for-four on the day, taking first in the 110H, 300H, high jump, and triple jump. The junior qualified for state competition last season in the high jump, which was the boosting factor he needed to put in the extra time this offseason. Green's 6-4 jump in the high jump set a Jim Thorpe school record."I put in a lot of extra time this offseason and it's already paying off," said Green. "I was in the weight room more, strengthening the muscles that are important in my events. I just put more focus into becoming a better track athlete and I'm determined to make it a successful season for both myself and the team."Senior Sam Gilkes also had quite the day for the Olympians. Gilkes brought home first in the 200, 400, and long jump."I knew this was my last season, so I wanted to put everything I had into getting better," said Gilkes. "I knew I was going to have the opportunity to be our top guy in some of these events, so I wanted to make sure that I was performing at a high level. I ran a lot more this offseason and I know that's helping. It's just good for me to get off to a good start like this because in the past I haven't been able to do that."For Thorpe, Chalid Smalls-Stokes (100), Dylan Bucior (800, 1600), Jacob Saxon (3200), Jason Montemuro, (pole vault) and Bailey Becker (discus) all brought home first places finishes as well.On the girls side, the Olympians had four double winners in Brooke Cope (shot put, javelin), Autumn Cope (long jump, triple jump), Delana Nalesnik (1600, 3200) and Colleen Hoffmann (100, pole vault).Sophomore Brooke Cope had an impressive showing in the javelin, throwing a distance of 138-3 1/2 crushing her previous school-record of 124-10."It feels really good to break my previous record by that much," said Cope. "I wanted to improve a lot this season and to get a mark like that out of the gates is really encouraging. My coaches are great and I know indoor track helped me out a lot and I definitely feel a lot more prepared than I was last year."For Nativity, Carina Buechel (400, high jump) and Lindsay Lord (100H, 300H) were double winners.BOYSJim Thorpe 115, Nativity 35100 - 1.
