Sesquicentennial logos chosen

A pair of winning submissions have been selected in the logo contest for Lehighton's upcoming Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Autumn Abelovsky, chairwoman of the Lehighton 150 Celebration Committee, made the announcement at Monday's borough council meeting.Abelovsky told council the committee chose Beth Franks and Kevin Long as co-winners in the logo contest. The submission by Franks depicts the Lehighton Municipal Building flanked by Indian heads and was digitally generated.Long's work is a hand drawing that mixes the history of the borough with the present. In a collagelike piece of work, a historical train and the airport are met with the Jacob Weiss Statue and Park Fountain.Abelovsky said the committee received dozens of submissions, and had a difficult time choosing just one logo to represent the community. As a result, it was decided at the end of the meeting that two winners would be selected and awarded $100 each.Along with Clark Ritter, committee co-chairman, Abelovsky presented both Franks and Long with their monetary awards."The committee did not place many limitations of the submissions, only asking that the logo should represent the Borough of Lehighton in some manner, and could be either free drawn or computer generated," Abelovsky said. "By choosing both types of artwork, the 150 Celebration Committee proves that Lehighton is a mix of old and new."Abelovsky said the Lehighton 150 Celebration Committee held the logo contest for the borough's Sesquicentennial Celebration, scheduled for the summer of 2016.She said when the borough celebrated its centennial in 1966, a logo contest was also held, at which time the winning submission was by Louise Fuschich-Christman, who is now a committee member for the sesquicentennial. That logo was used in banners, parades, commemorative items and books, Abelovsky said. She said the winning logos will be used in a fashion similar to how they were used during the centennial.Abelovsky said plans are already underway to use the logos in pamphlets, calendars, signs, coins and apparel.
