Lehighton buying new police lockers

Lehighton's police department will receive new lockers.

On a 6-0 measure, borough council on Monday agreed to purchase 10 lockers for its police department from Reynolds Business Systems Inc. in Allentown, at a cost of $12,280. Councilman Darryl Arner was absent.Prior to council's decision, borough Manager Nicole Beckett said there was no money allocated in this year's budget for the lockers.Borough Police Chief Brian Biechy told council the Bike Night Committee has agreed to donate $4,500 from its past two Bike Night events ($1,500 from this year, and $3,000 from last year), which will be used toward the lockers.In turn, council said the borough would pitch in the other $7,780 for the lockers.Afterward, Biechy expressed his appreciation toward council."Thank you for the lockers," Biechy said. "I understand it's a strain."Also on Monday, council granted its approval of the ACE Grant Compliance Letter to help enable the school district to apply for Department of Community & Economic Development funding for its proposed $32.5 million K-5 primary elementary center.However, council's approval is pending the outcome of land approvals associated with the project.In other business, council:• Approved the 2015 Minimum Obligation Worksheet for the non-uniform pension plan in the amount of $142,444. Beckett said that represents an increase of $24,193 from last year.• Granted permission to the Lehighton Fire Department to hold a pair of money drives on Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 in the lower borough park.• Granted approval for the Shull David Elementary PTO to hold a Zombie Zoom 5K Run or Stalk at the Lehighton Trailhead on Oct. 25.
