NL takes down Crusaders

Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout has been looking for consistency from his football team.

It was missing again on Friday night, but the Bulldogs came up with enough key plays for a 20-6 victory to keep Notre Dame of Green Pond winless."Inconsistent, inconsistent, inconsistent," Tout repeated afterwards. "Tonight was frustrating. You're happy you win. We had two wins last year. We're off to a good start at 3-1. We've got a lot to clean up."Tout was talking about the miscues that the Bulldogs made that could have been disastrous. The Bulldogs fumbled the ball six times, but wound up losing just three of them. The Crusaders also intercepted a pass. The Bulldogs rode the rushing of Nate Farber, who carried the ball 31 times for 151 yards and came up with a big stop with the Crusaders facing a 4th and goal from the one wit 2:40 remaining in the game. Farber stuffed Notre Dame's Trey Watson for no gain giving the ball back to the Bulldogs who ran out the clock."A lot was going through my mind," Farber said afterwards. "I knew that we had to stop them to get the momentum back and keep rolling. It was big. The defense did a real good job. We did what we had to do and just dug down and played Bulldog football."It was Farber who completed a nine-play, 61-yard drive on Northern Lehigh's first possession, finding the end zone on an 18-yard run. Chad Cederberg booted the PAT and with 6:12 left in the first quarter, the Bulldogs had a 7-0 lead.In the final minute of the quarter, Notre Dame's Kyle Arrington recovered a fumbled punt on the Northern Lehigh 11. Faced with a fourth and four three plays later, Arrington raced around the left end and fumbled just before he crossed the goal line and Stephan Scheib fell on it to give the Bulldogs possession to start the second quarter.Cameron Kates recovered a Notre Dame fumble on the Crusaders' 49, but Nick Basenese intercepted a pass on his own 16 to halt what looked like a solid Bulldog drive.Northern Lehigh managed another score with 19 seconds left in the half on a one-yard Farber run giving it a 13-0 lead at intermission. The Bulldogs fumbled again on their first possession of the second half, but C.J. Young quickly turned the momentum back in their favor as he returned an interception for a 42-yard touchdown. Cederberg's kick made it 20-0 with 8:39 still left in the third quarter. The Crusaders stopped the Bulldogs on the ND 29 late in the quarter, when Nick Brotzman found a wide open Mike Peapos open down the left sideline for a 71-yard score. Pierce McGowan blocked the extra point attempt keeping the Bulldogs in front 20-6.Both teams battled back and forth until Farber's big stop to put an end to the Notre Dame hopes."Our kids played hard," Tout said. "The execution wasn't there. We have to clean some things up. Defense was our spotlight. I think it played really well tonight. We just have to be more consistent. We do some good things, we do some ugly things. The turnovers are killing us right now so we have to clean that up."
