Unbeaten NW routs Bombers

Northwestern head coach Nate Hunsicker is pretty happy with his unbeaten boys soccer team midway through the regular season.

The Tigers picked up their ninth win without a loss on Thursday night by a 10-2 score over host Palmerton in a Colonial League matchup.Facing a young Blue Bomber squad that has just one win on the season, Hunsicker's worries of his team coming in being overconfident was quickly erased when it scored just 1:18 into the contest and never looked back."No matter who you play you have to come out firing on all cylinders and I tell the kids before every game regardless of the opponents record or what we know about them anything can happen on any given day," Hunsicker said. The Tigers didn't let up after that early goal either as Jonathan Haaf added a pair and Cody Gangaware slipped one past Palmerton goalie Rich Roselli in the first 20 minutes of the contest to give the league leaders a 4-0 advantage.Daniel Hallingstad, Christan Peters and Brandon Herb all added goals to make it a 7-0 lead before Hunsicker went to his bench."We came out firing right from the start, followed up the first goal with a few more pretty quick," Hunsicker said. "I was able to get a lot of reserves in who usually don't see a lot of minutes."They (the Bombers) struck back though, a tip of the hat to them. When we took that seven goal lead, they fought back at the end of the first half and put two in the back of the net before we finished them off in the second half."With 4:27 left until intermission, Devon Santos scored off an assist from Bryce Beahm to get the Blue Bombers on the board.Less than a minute later, Stefano Tangero added another one for Palmerton to make it 7-2 at halftime."Our boys didn't quit," said Palmerton head coachRyan Sharkazy. "I told them I'm not worried about the score, I'm worried about heart. And they showed me heart tonight. Unfortunately the score didn't work out in our favor, but I can't fault them for the effort they put forward. It was a tremendous step forward for us, I'll take it."We realize we're going to be underdogs the entire year. Nobody is going to take it easy on us. We just have to make sure we're getting better each game."Dominic Mertz, Herb and Andrew Goodolf added goals for Northwestern in the second half for the eight-goal win.Roselli had 13 saves in goal for the Bombers, while Brett Scott had five for the Tigers."We're 9-0 right now and this officially marked the midway point of our season," said Hunsicker. "There are a lot of important games left to be played for us yet, but all things considered, we're pointed in the right direction."
