Migration Fest offers many activities

On Saturday, Lehigh Gap Nature Center will host its annual Migration Fest, an autumn celebration of Appalachian Mountain ecology along the Kittatinny Ridge.

The activities are all free and will take place or begin at the Nature Center's Osprey House visitor and education center. The keynote speaker will be Julie Zickefoose, a nationally renowned artist, writer and naturalist at 7 p.m.Festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with two events. The first is a raptor identification workshop and field trip to Bake Oven Knob to observe the world-famous migration of birds of prey that follows the Kittatinny Ridge each autumn.The second is a bird walk for families and beginners. Binoculars and field guides will be available to borrow for both events. The field trip to Bake Oven Knob will last until noon, while the family friendly bird walk will be from 9-10 a.m.At 10 a.m., another family friendly activity will begin a butterfly and monarch butterfly tagging walk around the grounds at the Osprey House and along the Delaware & Lehigh trail. Nets will be available and all ages are welcome. A second butterfly walk and monarch tagging will occur at 1 p.m.The exhibits also begin at 10 a.m. Exhibits include live amphibians and reptiles, a beehive demonstration, kids crafts, and origami folding of passenger pigeons to commemorate the 100th anniversary of their extinction.At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. there will be garden tours to explore the amazing native plant gardens around the Osprey House. The festivities for the afternoon end at 3 p.m. The keynote address by Zickefoose is at 7 p.m.All Migration Festival weekend activities are free to the public.
