Richardson leads Tigers past PA

If Cam Richardson were a race horse, he'd be known as a mudder. The Northwestern senior caught two touchdown passes and ran 80 yards for another score in the Tigers 45-6 win over Pen Argyl on Saturday.

The win pushed Northwestern to 3-0 on the season, leaving it tied with Palmerton on top of the Colonial League's West Division.Rain, at times nearing torrential, fell throughout the game, giving the Tigers their first rain-soaked game in a couple of seasons. The last rainy day game that head coach Josh Snyder remembered was a horrible day against Southern Lehigh when the Tigers were trounced and had a poor showing on the wet field. This time around, they seemed undaunted by the bad weather and stayed as close to their game plan as the weather would permit."I think they dealt fantastically with the conditions," said Snyder. "I told them that initially, it's not going to affect our game plan as far as throwing the football and then we'd see how it progressed during the game."On their first drive of the game, quarterback Frank Dangello was intercepted by Chris Muller at the Pen Argyl 10-yard line. Northwestern's defense went to work and forced a three-and-out by the Knights and Harry Hall came up with a partially blocked punt to give the Tigers a first down at the Pen Argyl 13-yard line. A penalty would push the Tigers back, but Dangello again went to the air and hit Richardson on a 17 yard strike to give Northwestern a 7-0 lead after Brandon Miller hit the extra point."Frankie [Dangello] seemed to be handling some snaps that were iffy and delivering the ball," Snyder explained. "On some of the deeper routes, the ball was getting heavy and there's nothing you can do about that, but I thought we handled it fine."Early in the game, Northwestern stayed away from running senior Harry Hall, the Colonial League's top rusher, and Richardson was able to break away for an 80-yard run down the field, with Miller again providing the extra point and the Tigers stretching their lead to 14-0.Miller came up with a big 41-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 17-0 advantage.Northwestern put together a 65-yard, 2:24 drive that culminated with Dangello pushing his way across the goal line on a 1-yard run with time running in the first half. The play, and Miller's third extra point of the day, gave the Tigers a 24-0 halftime lead.Snyder thought the blocked punt by Hall was a big play for his club and that the special teams played a key role in the win over the Knights."We had them pinned pretty deep and we went for it and obviously, got it, and then converted that into a touchdown," said Snyder. "Coach (Greg) Mitchell does a great job with our special teams. It's a third of the game and you win or lose a third of your games on special teams, so we're doing a real good job. We converted on all of our kicks and got a good field goal in the first-half and that's really important that we're not leaving points out on the field," said Snyder. The rain and wet conditions seemed to bother Northwestern's offense on their first possession of the second half. The drive started at their own 15 yard line and they had to scramble to recover their own fumble on second down and then gave the Knights premium field position when Muller again picked off Dangello at the Tigers 25 yard line. The field position led to the only score of the day for Pen Argyl and the first points of the season against the Tigers first team defense. After the early stumble, Northwestern got back on track when Dangello capped an 11-play drive with a 13 yard pass to Taylor Breininger with 10:32 left in the game. On their next drive, Richardson would be in the end zone for the third time after catching a 23-yard pass from Dangello. Late in the game, both teams went to their second-team units and Northwestern's Brett Schillinger ran 20 yards for the final score of the day."Out of our first three games, I thought we were most balanced today. It was nice to see that we could stay balanced and go double-tight at times and spread at others and really keep them off balance," said Snyder.
