Schuylkill schedules cleanup

Time to get that old sofa off the front porch. Schuylkill County will hold its annual fall cleanup this month. Collections include scrap metal, tires, appliances, electronics and bulky items.

People bringing items to to drop off must provide proof of residency. Hazardous wastes such as paint, solvents, cleaners or poisons will not be accepted. For information about disposing of those items, call the county Office of Solid Waste at 570-628-1220.Locally, the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Plant Road will accept items from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22 through Sept. 26, and from 7 a.m. to noon Sept. 27.Electronics such as microwave ovens, television sets, and computer systems (limited to one each: monitor, printer or scanner, hard drive and peripherals), will be accepted free of charge.Tires include only car, light truck, motorcycle, and recreational vehicle up to 16 inches in diameter. The cost is $2 per tire, without rims, or $3 per tire with rims.There is a limit of 10 tires per load and no more than two loads per customer. Municipalities will also be charged the per tire fee and are asked to make an appointment for large loads.Appliances include air conditioners, refrigerators, dehumidifiers and other freon-bearing items at $10 each. Non-freon-bearing items, including stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, bicycles, barbecue grills, metal furniture and scrap metal will be accepted free of charge.Bulky items such as mattresses, box springs, rolls of carpet, doors, and windows cost $10 each to drop off. Sofas and overstuffed chairs can be dropped off for $5 per cushion.For example, a love seat with two cushions will cost $10.
