Lecture series begins

The Summit Hill Heritage Center, 1 W. Hazard St. is once again holding its fall lecture series with presentations on various topics by different speakers for free at the Center.

Each year lecture series organizer David Wargo attempts to schedule interesting and informative lectures on a variety of topics, and this year is no different."I have selected a variety of speakers on some different topics ranging from the paranormal to antiques and it should be a wonderful series," Wargo said. The lecture series opens at 7 p.m. today with Whispers of Wellness owner Mary Sbat, who will be speaking on the art of mediumship. Sbat is a Reiki practitioner who discusses how she entered into the realm of mediumship and how the process works for her as well as speaks on the experiences she has had in this field and discusses techniques for how everyone can learn to be more sensitive to the world around them. She previously spoke with a shorter lecture on this topic at the Whole Soul Holistic Fair last spring held at the Heritage Center and was well-received by her audience. The series continues at 11 a.m. Saturday with a lecture on genealogy by local historian and genealogist Carol Miller at the Center. Her lecture is scheduled in conjunction with the monthly flea market and will be held in the sanctuary.Miller has done genealogy research for several years and will be offering her insights, tips and tricks into learning from where your ancestors come.At 2 p.m. on Sept. 20, local historian and antiques aficionado John Gunsser will bring his wit and humor and many many artifacts from days of yore to the Heritage Center to share with attendees in a fun afternoon of guessing what many of these antiques were for. This is a delightful hands-on lecture for anyone and a wonderful time. If you have something old and you don't know what it is, bring it along and see if Gunsser can help you learn its secrets. At 7 p.m. Oct. 3, a new feature for the series is a mystery lecture by a guest speaker. The lips are tightly sealed on this one, but it guarantees to be a great deal of fun.Concluding the series is a special double feature on Oct. 24 and 25. The annual ghost story session with stories from the local area and readings from the literature of Edgar Allen Poe will be at 7 p.m. Oct 24. At 2 p.m. Oct. 25 is a special parent-child workshop.
