Palmerton defense steps up

WILSON - The old cliche "Offense wins games, defense wins championships" could be something the Palmerton Blue Bombers want to preserve and save after Saturday's 21-0 Colonial League win over Wilson.

The Bombers caused five turnovers and made three first half touchdowns stand up sending the Warriors to the loss."The defense played well, holding them in key situations were big," said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. "We could have folded at times. right before the half we stopped them when they were inside our 20. In the second half, we fumbled and responded to adversity."We will not be the prettiest bunch at times this year, but we are gritty. The kids just love to fight and love to play defense so we'll take that."The Bombers had quite the day on special teams also.Jared Mooney's 32-yard punt return to the Wilson 24 after the Bomber defense held set up the first TD.Sophomore Garrett Perschy, who passed for 100 yards in his first start under center, hit Sean Doherty for a 19-yard score with 5:25 left in the opening quarter. Rich Roselli booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead. The Warriors put together quite a drive that went into the second quarter, but two straight defense gems by Isaac George forced them to punt.Nick Sander fielded it on his own 21 and raced down the right sideline 79 yards for the Bombers second score of the afternoon. With 9:59 left in the half, Roselli kicked the PAT for a 14-0 advantage. The final score of the afternoon was set up by a Mooney interception giving the Bombers great field position at the Wilson eight. Six plays later, Perschy skipped into the end zone on a seven-yard keeper and Roselli's PAT made it 21-0 with 5:55 still left in the second quarter. Two interceptions by Shivone, one down at the Bombers two in the waning seconds before the half proved big. Doherty also intercepted a pass to stop a Warrior drive in the second quarter."The secondary's experience coming into the season we said would be one of our strongest suits," said Walkowiak. "It starts up front, too. We got great pressure on the interceptions and the secondary made great plays. I'm excited to where we are there."Nick Sander did it last year and he started out doing it this year. He's tough and likes to field the ball back there on punts."We wanted to come into today playing complimentary football. Offensively we played a little bit in the first half and went dormant. The defense and special teams picked us up so it was a complete game, a win and we'll take it."Perschy not only completed 8-of-12 passes, but picked up 40 yards on the ground, often scrambling when he couldn't find receivers open.On the other side of the ball, Tyler Rodgers and Rae Washington kept the Warriors from getting outside so Nick Labatch was forced to run inside off the tackles. The Bombers used a nine-play 24-yard drive to run out the clock and preserved the win.
