Lehighton volleyball team helps veterans home

Lehighton Area High School students know the value of giving back to the community.

The volleyball team, with the help of the high school band, cheerleaders and volleyball booster club, recently held at basket raffle, serving competition and charity event during one of its scheduled homegames.The group raised $1,300.T.J. O'Connor, head varsity volleyball coach at Lehighton, said that the girls decided to give the proceeds to the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Affairs Medical Center nursing home to help the veterans."It was a very successful event and had a lot of community support," he said.On Wednesday, the students presented the check to Henry Desrosiers, director of the Carbon County Veterans Affairs office, who will take the check to the nursing home.He thanked the school for supporting veterans and said that the money will be used on activities at the nursing home.This is the fourth year for the event.
