Saucon Vy. overwhelms Lehighton

Statistics tell the whole story of the girls' soccer game between Lehighton and Saucon Valley on Friday, which Saucon won 6-0.

Saucon Valley had 24 shots on goal, the Indians had four. The Panthers had seven corner kicks, Lehighton had none. The game was the opener in District 11 Class AA playoffs and eliminates the sixth-seeded Indians.Despite this, Lehighton coach Rich Emmert said he's very pleased with the success that his team had during the year."This is the first time in eight years that the Lehighton girls soccer team made district playoffs," said first year head coach Rich Emmert. "This was a big thing for us. I said (at the beginning of the season) we could get here."Playing with mostly underclassmen, including a freshman goalie, Emmert said things look very promising for next year.Of the third-seeded Panthers, Emmert said, "Major kudos to them. I give them all the credit in the world. They have skill, they have talent and they just outplayed us."Anybody on their team can play that ball. Their defenders were coming out and playing that ball. It's a well balanced team."Stevie Ochse, Saucon head coach, obviously was pleased with the performance by her squad. She especially heaped praise on juniors Lauren Binn and Paige Jones, who had three goals each.Binn had eight shots on goal and one assist. Jones whacked the ball at the goal seven times and provided three assists. The start of the game didn't appear that Saucon was going to be so dominant. Lehighton moved the ball downfield and very early, Rajah Quinones just missed getting a goal for Lehighton. After that, the Panthers took total control.Of Lehighton's four shots on the goal, three were by Quinones, who is only a sophomore, and one was by senior Erica Koutch. It was Jones who got the first score for Saucon, blasting a straight on shot past Lehighton's goalie nearly halfway through the first half.Nine minutes later, Jones maneuvered the ball to the front of the net then made another goal on a short, straight-on kick.At the 2:39 mark, Binn stole the ball from a Lehighton player deep in Indian territory and in the follow-up move, pushed it into the goal. Two of the three second half goals by Saucon came with under two minutes to play. Paige kicked the ball and it was partially blocked, but bounced off the defender, bounced past the posts, and made the score 5-0 with 1:50 left to pay. Binn added an exclamation point driving through three defenders to score with only 30 seconds left.
