Palmerton filmmaker wins award

Palmerton filmmaker Noah Berlow is the winner of the 2014 Outstanding Young Alumni Award presented by the Ithaca College Alumni Association at the Blue & Gold Appreciation Gala at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, on Oct. 11. The award was presented by the president of Ithaca College, Thomas R. Rochon, and Marc Hudak, president of the Ithaca College Alumni Association.

"For his achievements in the art of filmmaking and his ability to tell stories that reflect and impact culture, the Ithaca College Alumni Association is pleased to present filmmaker Noah Berlow with the 2014 Outstanding Young Alumni Award," said Christopher Pollock, director of Advancement Communications, Office of Marketing Communications at Ithaca College."I am grateful for my film professors at Ithaca College who inspired me to think critically about our culture and society as they helped me to find my voice," Berlow said."I am also grateful for my teachers and mentors from Palmerton Area High School in particular Mr. Ben Peruso and Dr. Tom Gilligan who took me under their wing, always gave me one-on-one feedback and challenged me on a daily basis to strive to be the best storyteller and filmmaker that I could be."Along side my parents, I've always believed their early influence had the greatest impact on the course of my professional career as a filmmaker, which has given me the honor of this prestigious Award today."Starting as a Park School of Communications student at Ithaca's LA campus, Berlow interned with Steven Spielberg's Survivors of the SHOAH Visual History Foundation, and was the editor of the 2007 BAFTA award-winning documentary "Recollections: Eye Witnesses Remember the Holocaust."Berlow has produced and edited films that were screened on VH1's Palladia network, including Sully Erna's "Journey to Avalon," a feature film; "Video Girl," shown on BET; and a documentary, "Kumpania: Flamenco Los Angeles," which won Best Documentary at the Memphis International Film Festival any many other international awards.Berlow produced and edited "Our World: Dropping the Knife Kurdistan," a documentary about female genital mutilation.It was viewed under the title "Handful of Ash" by Kurdish Parliament in 2011. They responded by outlawing the horrific practice. In 2013, the film was broadcast to a potential audience of 30 million viewers on BBC Arab TV.Berlow is a mentor at the ICLA campus, where he helps students discover their own voices and styles. Between contracts, Berlow is working on writing, producing and directing his first feature film exposing the widespread problems with America's overcrowded prison system.Born in Palmerton, Berlow is a graduate of the Allentown Jewish Day School, Palmerton Area High School, and the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College.He lives in Los Angeles, where he manages his film production company, Immortal Cinema International LLC, and the Immortal Cinema Veterans Foundation, whose mission is to provide veterans with employment opportunities in the film and entertainment industry to assist in their transition back into civilian life.
