Nesquehoning seeks rec. commission volunteers

Nesquehoning is looking for volunteers for its recreation and junior recreation commissions.

Borough council said Wednesday that there are spaces available on both commissions that need to be filled.Councilman Mark Stromelo said that on the recreation commission, three vacancies exist.Anyone interested in volunteering should send a letter of intent to the borough at 114 W. Catawissa St.Currently, the commission is planning to host trick-or-treaters next Thursday during trick-or-treat night in the borough. Commission members will be at the center handing out snacks and drinks and the restroom facilities will be available for use.Stromelo added that the commission is also currently planning its annual children's Christmas party for children in the borough.The party will be held Dec. 14. Anyone wishing to sign up a child can do so on Wednesdays during bingo.On the junior recreation commission, Mayor Sam Kitchko said that the group is looking for students interested in helping the borough.Students ages 10 to seniors in high school are eligible to volunteer for the commission.Kitchko said that the commission plans to do something again for the shut-ins of Nesquehoning for the Christmas holiday and more help is needed to prepare the baskets.To join the junior recreation commission, children's parents should contact the borough 570-669-9588 for more information.In other matters, council discussed or approved the following items:• Kitchko reported that in the month of September, the police collected $3,545; issued 37 citations; responded to 377 incidents; and drove 2,839 miles while on patrol.• Approved Rosemary Porembo to fill the Civil Service Commission vacancy.• Approved Derek Marouchoc's request to do a ride-along with borough police. Marouchoc is a college student working toward becoming a law enforcement officer and needs the experience.• Announced the next neighborhood watch meeting will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the borough hall.• Announced that trash collection for Lake Hauto residents has changed from Wednesday pick up to Monday because residents negotiated with Tamaqua Transfer for the change.
