Jacob's UCC celebrates 175th anniversary

Jacob's United Church of Christ in Weissport will celebrate its 175th anniversary Sunday.

The Rev. Alan Miller, minister for the Penn Northeast Conference of the UCC, will be the speaker for the ceremony, which starts at 2 p.m. at the 138 Franklin St. church.Miller's sermon is titled, "When Angels Hold Their Breath."The choir from Ben Salem UCC in Andreas and other friends and family will make up a mass choir under the direction of guest organist, Kathy Smith.White bookmarks will be presented."As we celebrate the 175th anniversary, I can see how this church has survived through many changes in the world," said Pastor Lillian Andreas, who has been with the church for four years. "The furnace needed replacement, the kitchen took on new life, the Sunday school rooms needed painting and the list goes on. We even had a house in Jim Thorpe given to us and it became the parsonage for one year. Now, we look back and say, wow."The church hosts many community events each year from senior citizen meetings and Red Cross blood drives to bake sales and basket socials.It also serves as an election polling place."We are grateful for the members of this church who have labored for the past 175 years," Andreas said. "The people of this church are warm, caring, hard-working and faithful."
