Capparell, Tigers crowned champs

BETHLEHEM - Northwestern girls cross country has been unstoppable for as long as most on the team can remember.

The Lady Tigers haven't lost a duel meet since 2010, and have won the last four Colonial League championships in convincing fashion.Marian Catholic's Tina Capparell has been nearly untouchable throughout her freshman year, winning almost every race she's entered, including last week's Schuylkill League championship meet.Northwestern and Capparell shined once again during Thursday's District 11 Cross Country Championships at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course, though the final result was a bit tighter for the former than it was the latter. The Lady Tigers claimed their third consecutive Class AA team title, edging second-place Wilson 73-78, while Capparell won the Class A race in 19:57, almost two minutes ahead of runner-up and defending champion MaKayla Lally of Pine Grove (21:43).Making yet another trip to next week's PIAA Cross Country Championships seemed unlikely after Allentown Central Catholic took the top three spots in the race, with Colleen Dady finishing first in 19:17.Northwestern, however, was able to offset the Vikettes sweep of the top three spots by placing six of its runners in the top-21, led by Carly Pierce's 11th place finish in 20:25."It took a total team effort today," said Northwestern coach Chris Stitzel. "We had girls really step up today. We didn't have our best race, but we were still able to do it."I'm just so proud of them. They got pushed, and they came through. I'm just so happy for them. They ran their hearts out. All seven of them came through today.""It just means a lot to know that every four years, I've gone (to states) with my team," the senior said. "It makes me feel very proud of my team and proud to be a part of Northwestern. I'm so excited that we'll have another chance."Unlike the Lady Tigers, Capparell ran uncontested, focusing on the utility vehicle that paces the lead runners rather than her competition."I just tried to focus on the Gator in front of me and tried to keep up with that," she said. "I just tried to talk to myself and keep pushing myself throughout the race."Marian coach Jeremy Dormer was more than pleased to see Capparell continue her success."I'm very proud of what she's accomplished so far," Dormer said. "We came down here last Saturday and practiced. We did three miles easy, and then we did short pickups and short sprints the second time around, and she worked hard on every single one of those repetitions."Her work ethic all season long at practice has carried her through to help her run the times that she has and it's helped her to the outstanding wins that she's had throughout the season."Now a league and district champion as only a freshman, Capparell will put her talents on display at next week's state meet."I'm really excited," she said. "I'm just going to keep working hard and see where I end up."Joining Capparell and the Northwestern team will be Pleasant Valley's Lizz Eberhardt and Jen Mickens, who finished eighth and 13th, respectively in the Class AAA race.Eberhardt will be making her second trip to Hershey after qualifying as a freshman last season, while Mickens will be making her first appearance.Despite finishing 10th in last week's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference meet on the same course, Eberhardt managed to surprise even herself with such a strong run on what was a blustery day."I am so happy with how I did today," she said. "I didn't expect to do that well. I was hoping to be around where I finished in leagues and get a top-10."But I'm really happy because I managed to start around seventh and finish in eighth. So I stayed fairly consistent throughout the race and I'm happy about that, especially with all of the wind we had."
