Former teacher waives hearing

A former Lehighton teacher and adviser to the National Honor Society who has been charged with sending inappropriate text messages to a 16-year-old male student waived a scheduled hearing on the charge on Wednesday.

Matthew Kyle Fisher of Lehighton was scheduled to have the hearing before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford.Defendants have the right to waive preliminary hearings directly to Carbon County Court, which Fisher opted to do.He must appear for arraignment at the office of the Carbon County district attorney on Dec. 18.His charge of corruption of minors is a misdemeanor. He is free on $1,000 unsecured bail.He has resigned as an employee of the Lehighton Area School District.Fisher, 32, was charged on Aug. 21 by trooper Nicolas De La Iglesia of the Lehighton barracks of the state police.The affidavit charges that Fisher became involved in a friendship with the student and between July 28 and Aug. 5, they communicated through multiple text messages.On two separate occasions, Fisher sent the teen an inappropriate sexual message, the affidavit says.The matter was first reported to Sergeant Joseph Lawrence of the Lehighton Police Department, who turned the matter over to state police.The affidavit said Fisher admitted to sending the text messages.
