Late Solehi goal beats Nolehi

SALISBURY - Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity to change the course of a game.

Southern Lehigh's Elizabeth Clemmer certainly made the most of her chance in the Colonial League field hockey semifinals at Salisbury High School against Northern Lehigh.Coming off a corner with just under three minutes to play, Clemmer secured a rebound in front of the Northern Lehigh net and slammed home what proved to be the game-winning goal in the No. 2 Spartans' 1-0 victory over the third-seeded Bulldogs."I think it was more of a broken play than anything," Southern Lehigh coach Adrienne Searfoss said afterwards. "Elise (Ashford) took a straight shot and didn't get all of it, but Lizzie (Clemmer) was able to gather it and put it in. It worked out, even though it seemed like organized chaos."And in situations that typically create more bedlam than harmony, Northern Lehigh coach Jess Frew knows that sometimes the demand can simply be too great for the defending players."When you're being bombarded on defense like that, it's a very intense situation," she said. "Anything can happen when they're constantly coming at you with the ball."There's only so much defense you can play."What proved to be yet another back-and-forth contest shouldn't have come as a surprise, since the teams played two nail biters during the regular season, with the Spartans (18-1, 16-1 CL) coming out on top by a 2-1 score in each game.Early on, however, Northern Lehigh (15-4, 13-4 CL) seemed to have benefited from the previous two contests, as the Bulldogs were able to push the ball up the field and consistently work it in front of the Southern Lehigh net.Despite the seemingly relentless pressure all around her, Spartans' keeper Jenna Cyr was able to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard."We really worked on some of the backfield passing that we needed to help us open up some opportunities on offense," Frew said of her team's strategy. "In the past, they (Southern Lehigh) really shut down the middle so we needed to focus on switching fields, which I saw and I was very pleased with."But realistically, given those opportunities on offense we really just needed to capitalize on them and finish."Southern Lehigh had a chance to go on top earlier in the second half when Elizabeth Thom stepped up to take a penalty stroke, but Northern Lehigh goalie Veronica Green knocked the shot aside with one of her seven saves.Green's play kept Northern Lehigh in a contest that could have gone either way, something Frew hopes the team can build on."She did an excellent job," the coach said. "Her saves were on point, and saving that penalty stroke was not easy. They are one-sided situations and they're usually in favor of the shooter."But she's very long and pretty agile so I think that plays in her favor. I'm really pleased with her performance, and with her only being a junior it makes me feel even more confident about the future of the team."While Southern Lehigh will look ahead to tomorrow's scheduled championship game against top-seed Moravian Academy, Northern Lehigh will look to its chance in the upcoming District 11 Class AA playoffs for some redemption."They have great team unity," Frew said of her squad. "If they can overcome this obstacle, it will make them a better team and it will make them successful in the future."

Northern Lehigh's Devon Pepe takes control of the ball during Monday's Colonial League semifinal against Southern Lehigh. A late goal by the Spartans gave them a 1-0 win.
