Trojans oust Bears

PARKLAND - Just like in American Football, the "time of possession" statistic in Futbol (also known as soccer) usually translates to success on the pitch.

Parkland had possession for 58% of the game, which propelled it to a 3-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference quarterfinal victory over Pleasant Valley.Jon Kleinhenz of Parkland put the ball top shelf in the seventh minute, thanks to a beautiful feed from Brendan Burke. The shot was perfectly placed where it was near impossible for Bears' goalkeeper Bradley Brickman to contest. Kleinhenz had two scores in the contest."We knew they collapse on the ball really well," said Parkland head coach Patrick Birns. "We tried to play simple, quick, and switch the fields and we thought we could be successful. That's exactly what we were looking to do on our first goal."Parkland's Ben Jago may have had the goal of the tournament in the 34th minute of the first half. A finessed strike from well over 30-yards out found the upper 90 of the net, again well out of the reach of any goalkeeper in the EPC."He's really stepped up for us playing playing holding-mid this season. He just hit a bomb, it was a great shot," Birns said.Pleasant Valley's real threat in the first half was a free kick in the 13th minute. The Trojan foul occurred right by the box that could have resulted in a penalty kick. Trojan keeper Evan Bleiler dove, fully extended, and kept the Bears off of the board."We have two keepers that could start on anyone else's team," explained the Trojan coach. "Bleiler is without a doubt our leader in the back. He uses his feet very well. I feel confident with him against Pleasant Valley's long ball style because he comes out and protects the goal really well."The Bear played a much better second half and earned a few opportunities to put some points on the board."We wanted to attack and not sit back that's not our style," said Pleasant Valley head coach Chris Pachuta. "In the beginning we were battling the mystique of Parkland. Once we settled in and got used to it we made some things happen."The Bears' goal came in the 17th minute of the second half after a great run down the field. Mike Baylo snuck the ball past Bleiler to finally get Pachuta's squad on the board."A bunch of guys picked it up in the second half and I think we understood that we had to go out there and be ourselves," noted the Bear coach. "If a few things go our way it could have been different game. There were a few calls that didn't go in our favor but that's soccer."The Trojans will square off with Emmaus, whom they've split with in the regular season, both of which ended up being a 1-0 final.
