Barrett bans Trick or Treat

The hunt for accused killer Eric Frein in the heavily wooded area of Barrett Township has spooked supervisors into postponing the annual Halloween parade and bagging trick or treat night.

"We're certainly saddened and inconvenienced about this decision we had to make, but we feel it was right one," said Supervisor Loree Guthrie. The parade was planned for Oct. 26. But, Guthrie said, the starting point was at Barrett Elementary School, and supervisors were worried. Guthrie said other starting locations were discussed, but none seemed to work out. Police who would normally provide security are busy looking for Frein."This is for the safety of anybody coming out to the parade. Also, if Eric Frein was sighted somewhere (along the parade route), he might endanger others, and also impede law enforcement from getting to him," she said."Nobody wants to endanger citizens' lives, particularly not those of children."Frein, 31, an expert marksman and self-styled survivalist obsessed with portraying soldiers in war games, is believed to be hiding in the Barrett-Price township area, in a several-square mile radius around his Canadensis home.Police say Frein ambushed state troopers Cpl. Bryon Dickson and Alex Douglass at 10:50 p.m. Sept. 12, firing at them outside the Blooming Grove barracks in Pike County. Dickson was killed and Douglass severely injured. More than 1,000 troopers and other law enforcement personnel have been combing the woods looking for him.Guthrie said she hopes the parade can be reschedules after Frein is caught.State police Cpl. George Bivens has said there have been at least four sightings of Frein in the past week, and police have found what they say is a journal written by Frein, detailing the killings. the journal was found in a garbage bag at one of the campsites Frein is believed to have bolted from as police got close.Evidence recovered from Frein's Jeep, which he left partially submerged in a retention pond about two miles from the barracks, as well as evidence recovered from his home, links Frein to the shootings, police say.
