NL field hockey, PV soccer triumph

The Northern Lehigh field hockey team and Pleasant Valley boys soccer team continued strong seasons with victories on Thursday.

BOYS SOCCERStroudsburg-Pleasant Vy.Pleasant Valley was victorious in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match over Stroudsburg, 1-0.Devon Woltal scored the lone goal in the contest. Noah Fulcomer assisted on the Bear score.Pleasant Valley compiled eight shots in the match, seven which were saved by Nico Ruiz.The Bears improve to 11-5-2 overall and 11-4-1 in the league. Stroudsburg is now 14-3-1 overall and 12-3-1 in the EPC.Jim Thorpe-Pine GroveZach Tritt's second half goal was all the scoring as Pine Grove edged Jim Thorpe, 1-0, in Schuylkill League action.Olympian goalie Carter Rodiguez made 21 saves to keep his team close. Jason Soper had 12 saves in the net for Pine Grove.FIELD HOCKEYNorthwestern-No. LehighJess Olewine's hat trick sparked Northern Lehigh to a 4-0 Colonial League victory over Northwestern.Erin Kemmerer added the other score for the Bulldogs, while Erika McKay recorded two assists. Teammates Alyssa Fritzinger and Brittany Pristash both added assists.The Tigers' keeper Laura Kotula ended up with 37 saves, while the Bulldogs' Veronica Green had one.Northern Lehigh improves to 15-3 overall and 13-3 in the league.Lehighton-Bethlehem Cath.Lehighton used three first half goals to edge Bethlehem Catholic for a 3-2 non-conference victory.Riley Durishin, Saige Miller and Tia Brownmiller posted the goals for the Indians.Maggie Melhem led Becahi with a goal and an assist, while Riley Oliveria added the other score.The Indians' keeper Michelle Bozilesky finished with nine saves.GIRLS SOCCERPottsville-LehightonCarly Hoak's goal with 1:27 left in the game helped lift Pottsville to a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.It was Hoak's second goal of the contest, while Gabrielle Evans had the other score for the Tide.Allison Andrew scored a first half goal for the Indians, while Raja Quinones knotted the game up with 30:51 left in the second half.Lehighton slips to 12-5 overall and 5-6 in the league.Pine Grove-TamaquaPine Grove exploded for seven goals in the first half during a Schuylkill League win against Tamaqua, 7-1.Morgan Boyle scored the lone goal for Tamaqua which opened up the scoring in the first half.Meriah Lesh led the way for Pine Grove with a hat-trick.Carly Sassaman had four saves in the match.Jim Thorpe-Blue Mtn.After a scoreless first half, Blue Mountain tallied twice in the second half to gain a 2-0 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.Emily Valentine's goal with 11:53 left in the contest gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.The Olympians' Rebecca Cressman stopped 18 of Blue Mountain's 20 shots while Carleigh Bogotuik had six saves to earn the shutout.VOLLEYBALLPottsville-Jim ThorpePottsville swept Jim Thorpe in a Schuylkill League match, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.Despite the loss, Riley Carroll of Jim Thorpe had 15 assists and four kills.Erin Shigo had 31 digs and 10 kills, as Alex McGinley had 19 digs of her own.Blue Mountain-LehightonBlue Mountain rolled to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.Katie Higgins paced the Indians with nine digs, seven kills, and three assists, while Alyssa Jordan recorded 10 digs and five kills.Maya Throne led the Blue Eagles with 30digs and two assists, while Nicole McQuillan added seven kills.Tamaqua-Pine GrovePine Grove got the best of Tamaqua in three games for a 25-3, 25-10, 25-18 victory.Vanessa Solt led the Blue Raiders with 14 digs, three service pts and two kills, while Alexis Baddick had 10 digs and four kills.Teammates Yeni Benigno (seven service points) and Olivia Matula (five kills, three digs) contributed in the setback.FOOTBALLJUNIOR VARSITYLehighton-MarianLehighton edged Marian, 18-14Mike Mayernik scored all three touchdowns for the Indians. Matt Strubinger had an interception and Dominic Polumbo had a fumble recovery to lead the defense for Lehighton (3-1-1).Middle SchoolLehighton-PottsvilleLehighton registered its second straight shutout, blanking Pottsville, 31-0.Dakota Hiester had five tackles for losses and Chris Whiteman added a fumble recivery to pace the Indian defense.Chris Whiteman, Tyler Shupp, Eli Ruffing, Tahmir Spencer and Shane Williams scored touchdowns for Indians.Tamaqua-MinersvilleTamaqua exploded for 46 first-half points and went on to rout Minersville, 64-30.Nick Breiner carried the ball five times for 119 yards and three touchdowns to lead the unbeaten Raiders (6-0). Luke Van Buskirk scored a pair of TDs while Brady Moyer, Mike Bonetsky, Matt Kistler, Pierce Demetriades and Domanic Weider all scored once. Quarterback Brayden Knoblauch also had a big game with three touchdown passes.
