Olexson, Urland make history

HELLERTOWN - Pleasant Valley's Madison Olexson and Kara Urland had a start they would like to forget, but a finish they'll always remember.

On Wednesday at Saucon Valley High School, Olexson and Urland became the first Pleasant Valley girls doubles team in school history to reach the quarterfinal round of the District 11 Class AAA Tennis Tournament. They accomplished the feat in spectacular fashion, winning 22 consecutive games to close out the opening day."Madison and Kara did a really nice job of bouncing back from a slow start and playing great tennis," said Pleasant Valley coach Mark Allison. "They are the first girls doubles team we ever had make it to the quarterfinals. That is going to be something they'll always remember."While it turned out to be a memorable day for Olexson and Urland, it definitely didn't start out that way.The Bears' top doubles team, who entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed, struggled early in their opening match against Dieruff's Siani-Lee Vasquez and Marissa Moyer, falling behind 4-2 in the first set.The unseeded Huskies appeared poised to take a commanding 5-2 lead when they jumped out to a 30-0 lead in the next game. But that's when everything turned around for the Bears.Olexson and Urland fought back to hold serve and begin an incredible run that would see them win every game the rest of the day."We talk a lot on the court," said Urland. "After we battled back to cut Dieruff's lead to 4-3, we talked on the crossover about how we weren't playing well."We talked a little strategy, but mostly we talked about just relaxing and playing like we were capable."Pleasant Valley won the next three games to close out the set and then breezed to a 6-0 second set win to advance to the second round."I think communication is definitely one of our strengths," said Olexson. "Kara and I played doubles together freshmen year so this is our fourth year as teammates. I think that really helps us."We are good at seeing what the other team is doing and then adjusting. We'll talk about their weaknesses and then try to attack that area."Allison said that type of awareness on the court is vital.vital."I thought we started serving better and also playing much better at the net," he said when talking about the turnaround. "But I don't think you can overestimate how important court awareness and intelligence is to their game."Madison and Kara are thinking tennis players. That's one of the reasons that when they fell behind Dieruff I didn't go out and talk to them. They're seniors and I was confident that they knew what they needed to do in that situation."Olexson and Urland followed their opening victory with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bangor's Olivia Smith and Jen LaBar in their second match."I think finishing out the Dieruff match like we did had us feeling pretty good about our game going into the Bangor match," said Olexson. "We were able to get off to a good start against them and never let up."Urland added, "We got on a really nice run. We started to build a lot of momentum and were playing loose and with a lot of confidence."Olexson and Urland weren't the only Bears team that gave Allison a reason to smile on Wednesday as the Pleasant Valley team of Nyiah Nevarez and Monica Jarog defeated Pocono Mountain West in their opening match, 7-5, 6-3. The Bears were eliminated in the second round by the No. 1 seeded team of Brittany and Kaitlyn Poje of East Stroudsburg South, 6-1, 6-0."I'm really happy with the way our second doubles team performed today," said Allison. "That was a great win over West's top doubles team and then they battled hard against the Poje twins and even managed to get a game off of them."It was a great day for our program. We won three matches today and got Madison and Kara into the quarterfinals. I couldn't be happier about how we played."Because of the chance of rain on Friday, the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds have been moved up to today at Parkland at 12 p.m. Olexson and Urland will face No. 2 seed Liberty in the quarters.
