WEISSPORT Council concerned about police hours

Weissport Borough Council is concerned that its police chief isn't working enough hours in the community.

"Either he's going to put more time in or we're going to get somebody else," said council member Arland Moyer."The car (police cruiser) hasn't been moved in almost a month."The part-time police chief, Trevor Flexer, began working in the borough on July 22.The council said it doesn't know how many hours Flexer has worked so far because the mayor is in charge of the police department. The mayor, Jonathan Troutman, wasn't present at Monday's council meeting.Council member Brenda Leiby said, "I don't know what to say when people ask if we have a police officer or not."No additional discussion was held on the matter. In other business:• The council approved an ordinance establishing a 15 miles-per-hour speed limit on Franklin Street in the area of the playground, from Forge to Lime Street. The ordinance states that the speed limit on other streets is 25 miles per hour.• Moyer said there are continued complaints of a resident burning items daily at a property behind Prospect Street. He said code enforcement officer Duane Dellecker was going to investigate the matter, but the council hasn't been informed of results.Resident "Pop" May said the open burning occurs almost every night after dark. He said it smells like plastic and emits "thick, black smoke."Council said the open burning is near a garage and a residence.Moyer said the borough ordinance permits burning only on the first and third Saturdays of the month from dusk to dawn, and the individual doing the burning must be present.• Council set budget meetings for 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 27 and Nov. 10. The next regular meeting of council is 7 p.m. Oct. 20.• Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has informed council that a pre-construction meeting regarding curb ramps to be installed on Bridge Street will be held Friday at PennDOT's Allentown office. The curb ramps must be installed to comply with Americans With Disabilities Act standards.• The borough is considering purchasing an "all-season lawn tractor," which has capabilities for street sweeping, cutting grass, picking up leaves, and plowing, at a cost of $32,506 from Koch's Lawn and Garden, New Ringgold. The decision will depend on whether financing is available and on the figures to be revealed in budget preparation. The council said the machine would be valuable in maintaining the flood levee.
