There are instances in our history, especially during times of war, where this country has treated its own shamefully.

The treatment of Native Americans, especially during the late 1800s, is a dark chapter for the U.S. as was the relocation of Japanese Americans to internment camps because of the fear of sabotage during World War II.Despite their treatment, both groups fought with valor in World War II.The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all-Nisei U.S. Army regiment, became, for its size and length of service, the most decorated unit in U.S. military history. And the Navajo code talkers, who were specially recruited by the Marines to transmit coded messages in their native language during the island campaigns in the Pacific, also served heroically in the war.A strength of any nation is the ability to admit mistakes. In the cases of these two groups, the healing process took decades. On the other end of the spectrum are the actual traitors who turn their back on this country. The Americans who choose to fight with the terrorist group ISIS certainly fall into this category.U.S. officials have said that more than 100 Americans are among those who have tried to join various militant groups in Syria. The ISIS leaders are well-educated and are masters at propaganda.Through social media, they are not only inviting new recruits to join their ranks in Syria but also urging lone wolf terrorists to wage war within our borders. In recent weeks, we've seen evidence of this with the hatchet attack by a maniac on police in New York City and the beheading at an Oklahoma food distribution center. The FBI reportedly not only tracks Americans who are in Syria, but also those who want to go.On Sept. 2, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters, "The United States, including the State Department, has long had the authority to revoke passports and the capability of putting individuals on a no-fly list."That action should be a no-brainer. Allowing radicalized jihadists, who abandoned this country and fight with its sworn enemy, to return to the United States makes no sense. How do you keep them from emerging from their basements and following the ISIS doctrine to kill Americans, who they consider infidels? These traitors to America should have their citizenship rights taken away and passports revoked the moment they leave our shores to fight for ISIS.By JIM ZBICKeditor@tnonline.com
