Federal court honors

The U.S. federal courts have recognized a Carbon County man for his role in improving the federal court's probation program.

Anthony C. Harvilla of Tresckow, Banks Township, was honored on Nov. 5 during a ceremony held at the Ronald Reagan Federal Courthouse in Harrisburg.U.S. District Court Judge Yvette Kane presented Harvilla a citation that recognizes his contributions to the Offender Re-Entry program in the Middle District of Pennsylvania.Harvilla retired as the Chief United States Probation Officer of the Middle District in July.The citation states, "In appreciation of your extraordinary contributions to the Court Assisted Re-Entry Program, including the production of a documentary to recruit participants, the expansion of the program to include mentors from Rotary clubs, and the national exposure of the CARE Program."The CARE Program was developed to assist high-risk offenders in their reintegration to the community after lengthy prison terms. Vanaskie, U.S. Circuit Judge; William J. Arbuckle III, U.S. Magistrate Judge; Peter J. Smith, U.S. Attorney; James V. Wade, Federal Public Defender; Drew Thompson, Chief U.S. Probation Officer; Eric W. Noll, Deputy Chief U.S. Probation Officer; and Karen F. Snider, president, Rotary Club of Harrisburg.Harvilla served the U.S. courts for 25 years, including the final four years as chief.Before his federal service, he was employed for nearly 12 years by Carbon County as chief adult probation officer and as the first work release coordinator in the Sheriff's Office.He has two daughters, Lauren and Lindsey, and lives in Tresckow with his wife, Cheryl.
