Pilla and Stankiewitch lift Fillies past Lititz Christian

MINERSVILLE - In a famous song called "Taking Care of Business" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, in the chorus of that song there's a line that goes; "taking care of business and working overtime."

Taking care of business and working overtime should be the mission statement for the Marian Fillies volleyball team this season. The Fillies have been taking care of business on the court, while putting in the extra time in the gym and it has most certainly been paying the bills. All their hard work showed once again on Tuesday, as the Fillies cruised to a PIAA Class A opening round victory over Lititz Christian 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-13).From the onset, the Fillies (23-0) looked poised to move on as they jumped out to a 15-7 lead on the Eagles in game one. Lititz Christian battled back a bit in the frame taking advantage of some Marian errors, but the Fillies were just too strong, winning game one 25-15.Game two proved to be a little bit closer as the Eagles tied the Fillies twice throughout the stanza. However, senior Emily Pilla proved to be the difference every time the Eagles would gain a little momentum. Pilla did damage from the service line and at the net for the Fillies, coming up with four aces and four kills in the set. She was definitely dialed in and it propelled Marian to a 25-18 game two win."I believe we played with higher intensity tonight than we did in our last match and we need to continue to play that way," said Pilla. "If you lose at this stage in the game you go home, so each set becomes extremely important. We all work really well together, we just have to really focus on keeping our intensity at a high level."Another obvious advantage for the Fillies was in the middle. 6-1 Abby Stankiewitch (eight kills) patrols the middle for Marian and the undersized Lititz Christian had no answer. The Fillies had close to a 100 percent kill rate whenever Stankiewitch was given the opportunity to score."When I went to scout them I knew they didn't have anybody that could match up with Abby (Stankiewitch)," said Marian coach John Fallabel. "When you have an athletic and skilled six foot middle at the class A level, you're going to have the advantage on most nights. We handled the match pretty well."In game three, it was almost like the Fillies had enough and dominated the Eagles from start to finish. They jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. It was the type of focused performance that Coach Fallabel wants to see on a more consistent basis."We just have to focus better," said Fallabel. "We left too many points out there tonight with some errors and we need to fix that. We're really going to work extra hard in practice the rest of the week to iron those type of things out. This is a fun ride and we want to continue to stay on it."For Lititz Christian, Lexi Enck led the Eagles with 12 kills.Pilla finished with eight kills, 18 service points, and an impressive 11 aces for Marian. The Fillies will now move on to the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Class A tournament where they will face District 1 Champion Sacred Heart at a site and time to be determined.
